Berlin’s Altes Museum will close for a major renovation in 2030. The project aims to update the museum’s facilities while preserving its historic neoclassical architecture.

The Altes Museum was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and opened in 1830. It is one of Berlin’s oldest museums and houses the Antikensammlung, a collection of classical antiquities including Greek, Roman, and Etruscan artifacts.

The renovation will address aging infrastructure and improve climate control systems to better protect the museum’s artworks. Planners hope to modernize the visitor experience with upgraded exhibition spaces and accessibility features.

The museum is located on Museum Island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its landmark dome and grand columned façade are central features of the Berlin cityscape.

The stay of the renovation period has not been finalized. Officials expect the work to be extensive given the building’s cultural significance and architectural constraints.

The Altes Museum is operated by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, which oversees several museums in the city. The renovation will help ensure the continued preservation of its notable collection for future generations.
