The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa has added new works to its American art collection, with recent acquisitions including a painting by early 20th-century artist Ernest L. Blumenschein. The piece, acquired in August 2026, enriches the museum’s holdings of Native American and Western art.

The new painting joins other significant works by Blumenschein, who co-founded the Taos Society of Artists and whose landscapes and cultural scenes have been central to the museum’s mission. The Gilcrease collects art reflecting the history of the American West and Native peoples, preserving both historical documents and visual art.

These acquisitions follow the museum’s continued efforts to deepen its representation of artists who shaped regional perspectives. Gilcrease Museum staff confirmed the painting was purchased through a private sale, though the price was not disclosed. The museum houses more than 10,000 art pieces alongside artifacts related to the history of the American West.

Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Gilcrease Museum holds the world’s largest collection of artworks and artifacts related to Native Americans and the American West, a focus that guides its ongoing acquisitions and exhibitions.
