When an exhibition lets you choose your own route

Some exhibitions guide visitors in a very clear order from beginning to end. Others are more open, letting you choose your own route through the story.

That can work beautifully when the exhibition has strong themes, clear room titles, and enough visual clues to help visitors understand where they are. You might start with one section, skip across to another, return later, and still feel that the exhibition makes sense.

It can also be risky. If the route is too loose, visitors may miss important context or feel unsure whether they have seen the main parts.

Do you prefer exhibitions with one clear path, or do you like being able to move through them more freely?

Have you seen an exhibition where the open layout worked especially well?
