How do you photograph busy galleries without losing the atmosphere?

Busy museum galleries can be difficult to photograph.

Sometimes the crowd is part of the atmosphere, especially in a major museum where the scale and energy of the place matter. Other times, too many people in the frame can distract from the room, the object, or the architecture you wanted to capture.

There is also the question of respect. Many visitors try to avoid photographing strangers too clearly, but still want to remember what the gallery felt like on the day.

How do you handle photos in busy museum spaces?

Do you wait for a quieter moment, include the crowd as part of the scene, focus on details, or avoid taking the photo altogether?
